Yarn Along
My knitting has been mindlessly simple this week. I am making a pair of socks for my husband out of my favorite sock yarn for him. A few of you asked why this brand and even though I only make socks out of 75% wool and 25% nylon blend for him, he can wear a hole in the majority of brands. Trekking is sturdy and durable for two years which makes this a favorite. I think it has to do with the twist of the yarn.
I finished my pi shawl and did a post about it. I'm so pleased with it and thank you for the lovely compliments. I still can't believe it is off the needles-I could easily start another lace project but I'm taking a few days off to mull over what I want to knit next.
Since snagging up this copy of The Perks of Being a Wallflower on Saturday-I immediately started reading it. My son read it over the summer and insisted that it was a must read kind of book. It is a sad and it's filled with teenage angst. It's a fast read and if you want to embark on the turmoil of a male teenager then you should read it, be prepared to feel depressed and compelled to help him with his problems.
Since I enjoyed raising teenagers more than caring for little babies (yes it's true!) I found myself thinking how lucky I was as a mother to have children who made it through their teenage years with minimal bumps in the road. Both of them felt close enough to share their problems with either of us and for that I'm truly grateful.
What are you knitting and reading this week?
Joining Ginny
I am going to have to find that yarn for Mike's socks, he is terrible about holes.
ReplyDeleteMy children all went through the teen years with no problems either. I have heard horror stories, but thankfully never experienced them.
While I loved babies, teens are fun too, they help keep you young!
guys really are hard on their socks, aren't they???? I always look for that 25% nylon...I think that might be the secret! although there is something to be said for a good twist, too!!!
ReplyDeletewe were lucky with our teenagers, too---they keep you on your toes, that's for sure!!! (as long as you confessed....I was never a 'baby' lover, either.....I did much better after they could walk and talk!!!)
I'm encouraged by your report that being a mother to teens was enjoyable. My oldest is 13 this year, so I'm open to encouragment as a mom! Also- I need to look up the Trekking yarn. I like my socks to last, too. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip on the yarn, as I am just beginning to knit socks, and I don't like to darn them. Also, I love that colorway, being a fan of greens myself!
ReplyDeleteI thought I would mourn not having toddlers about, but my youngest is turning four and my oldest fourteen, and I must say that I am really enjoying the older kids now...they crack me up and are so much fun to be around. My own teen years were awful, so I was rather dreading having teens, but it doesn't seem quite so scary now!
ooh i think i might have to get hold of that book - I've heard it's good; I must look it up on kindle!!
ReplyDeletethanks for the yarn tip - I'm new to socks (as in working on my first pair right now) so I'm looking at the best yarns for the job. Have a knitty wednesday xxx
Love that colorway!!! I need to try knitting socks. I still need to get back to knitting though. With so little time alone I find pickig up the needles right now to be a bit hard to do.
ReplyDeleteThat yarn is gorgeous - I made a mental note of the brand last time you mentioned it (George is *so* hard on his socks), but also? He loves green. That colorway would be so perfect for him. I'll have to go track some down... xo
ReplyDeleteLovely greens. A little mindless knitting is nice, good for chatting or watching tv :) Or refereeing, as I often find myself.
ReplyDeleteI love your description of the book ~ I seem to remember that being my stepsons favorite high school read (of the four books that he was compelled to read during those years!) You put a big smile on my face. Teen angst...ugh, give me babies any day! Well, toddlers, at least ;)
ReplyDeleteI spoke of you and your socks at knitting on Monday (most reverently, of course)...and the many needles you are using. Even the 'simple knitting' you think you are doing is really quite awe-inspiring to the novices such as myself! :)
I love that yarn. And yes - Trekking is durable for sure.
ReplyDeleteWe are nearing the end of the teen years and I have to say I think I enjoyed it more than the baby years too. I love babies, but I like the interaction as they grow older. Keeping my fingers crossed that the bumps remain few and far between as we approach the 20's in a couple of years.
I love the color of his socks. I think they made a movie of that book last year (which I haven't seen because I don't see movies anymore).
ReplyDeleteI love all those greens, it makes me wishful for spring! I have also been meaning to pick up that book...

Love the color, so springy! xxx
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info re: your preferred sock yarn; good to know! I've yet to knit my mister a pair of socks, but I think a pair is due him for all the knitting he puts up with. :)
ReplyDeleteI still can't get over your gorgeous Pi shawl. It's amazing. I've just finished two more pairs of socks. I've been using up odd yarn so made some fun stripy ones, and still reading Bird Cloud...there's only a couple of pages to go. But we're busy decorating at the moment and staying up much too late these days to read.
ReplyDeleteLove the colors in your sock yarn!
ReplyDeleteI'm usually not big on greens but I love the colors in that yarn.
ReplyDeletelove the socks- they look nice while still being functional-- and good tip on the sturdiness of the sock yarn, never know when I'll need a good sturdy sock yarn!
ReplyDeleteAs I said previously, I think all teenagers should read that book. I think it's a got some good lessons in there and it did make me appreciate my boys...they got hugs after that one.
ReplyDeleteI need to get that book, I've got a few years before my littlies are teenages but already I worry about it. I know who I hope will be their role models but I don't know how to navigate the years ahead!
ReplyDeleteA little (or large) sock is a nice change from a large shawl, no?
ReplyDeletePretty colours perfect for plain.
Oh that color of Trekking knit up even better than I imagined...
ReplyDeleteLove that sock yarn!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great colour. I must check out that yarn. I preferred raising older children too and am now at that stage with youngest. I have three older children past their teens and 2/3 were o problem - one had it's challenges, but we have come through them xxx
ReplyDeleteMy mother constantly knit socks for my dad, and then constantly repaired toes & heels! I've not tried knitting them myself (yet!). I shared some 'angst' books with my daughter, and enjoyed taking myself back to those teen years and reminding myself of teenage trials. My daughter has breezed through the teen years, but oddly enough it's my son who has all the emotional turmoil ... we have some interesting talks ;) Popped over from Yarn Along! Wendy
ReplyDeletethat colorway is lovely! And I still have yet to knit a sock!
ReplyDeleteOooh thank you for the yarn recommendation - this has been one of my *issues* with handknitted socks (wanted to find a yarn that's fairly tough).
ReplyDeleteI saw the film last year and thought the same thing.
ReplyDeleteYour yarn looks wonderful, perfect colours to call spring to come along!
I have a pair of Dave's socks that need darning. I think I need to switch yarns. I think that book may worry me, but I will pick it up to read next.
ReplyDeleteLovely socks! I haven't read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but I know that feeling so well--some characters just stay with me for weeks, and I wish so much I could help them! I'm very glad your kids had minimal angst--that probably has quite a lot to do with your parenting! :)
ReplyDeleteTrekking yarn is great! Nice color.
