February Wonder
Can you believe that it's February already? Sometimes it feels like I just celebrated Christmas and my company left to go return to their homes. Do you like February? I do! I like this month so much. I like witnessing the return of light and hearing the birds, yes the birds singing again in the morning. They think maybe it's Spring. Birds are positive thinkers in the world.
I like the shortness of February, a tiny bridge of time between January and March. I've been walking with Frodo when the weather permits and while everything is brown, cold, cloudy and gray, the walk feels refreshing and hopeful of time marching on.
My mother hated February. During this month she would declare she had "the winter pissies" and I would chuckle. She never liked being cold. She would sit in her rocking chair bundled up in a fluffy robe and fluffy slippers cursing the winter days.
More than likely, my extreme enthusiasm for winter and chilliness made her all the more disgruntled about the state of affairs with the weather. Maybe in my immaturity I egged her on. I flaunted the wonderfulness of snow, cold and wind. During February she didn't have a sense of humor and that inspired me to declare winter love all the more.
Many winter haters would say to me in my youth "you don't have to drive in bad weather" well guess what? I'm an adult now and I don't mind driving in bad weather. When we lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I drove every single day on snowy icy roads in the winter because that was a way of life. Keep in mind though that the whole community had some excellent winter driving skills.
So here I stand, a betrayer of summer loving, hoping you will give me this opportunity to bask in the glory of winter. All too soon, spring will be here then summer. The best part of having four seasons is everyone has a favorite and everyone gets to enjoy those months when they roll in.
Many years ago I made the decision to try to see beauty every day and to witness something wonderful in nature. I have a difficult time enjoying Summer because my arthritis is at it's worse. My gratitude list helps me tally those moments no matter what season I am experiencing.
I don't know why my cactus blooms, it likes the window it sits by I guess. |
Happy February everyone, go out and witness something beautiful!!
Thank you for giving us so many reasons to enjoy February (and also a lovely photographic tour of your home)!
ReplyDeleteI am a winter lover too, so there are at least two of us! :-)
ReplyDeleteThe phrase "winter pissies" is absolutely hilarious. I'm gonna start telling people I have the "summer pissies."
Your Mum and my Dad would make a good pair. My Dad hates Winter full stop. I like you, try to find something I love throughout each season. At the moment I am enjoying the snowdrops just starting to emerge it is such a beautiful sight. Hope you have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteI am a winter lover too (though sometimes I do find that, with the days short, I get a little glum) But I love snow, and sweaters, and wool, and being cozy! I'm never in a hurry for winter to leave. Lovely post filled with beautiful photos :)
ReplyDeleteWhile fall may be my FAVORITE season, winter runs close behind. Here in Jacksonville, our flowering trees are just starting to bloom and everything looks so colorful.
ReplyDeleteI truly enjoy each season...though summer is now my least favorite for sure. I enjoy winter for the coziness it inspires; the cooking I do; knitting and reading under a pile of blankets, etc. Thanks for such a pretty post.
ReplyDeleteI am definitely a 4 season person and I do love the bitter cold of winter -- it makes me feel alive if that makes any sense. My complaint with February is that I'm just settling back into the rhythm of home and the lengthening days remind me that in just a blink of the eye, I'll be heading back out for my field stint... Let's hope that though short, February slows down!
ReplyDeletei love that cactus, i have one and it thrills me when it blooms before christmas..They love the breezes and window.
ReplyDelete"February" and "spring" don't appear in the same sentence in my part of the world. We've been having lows around 0 degrees at night. Not that I'm complaining. I love winter.
ReplyDeleteGreat great post.. I can look outside and see cardinals and bluejays on the feeders. Yesterday a fox in the woods. THe hot tub is extra wonderful in winter. yes the days are slower, and I do get the March Pissies! But I love valentines day and all of February. I love snow storms. We have a snowsculpting competition in town this weekend. People here make the winter a fun place. :)
ReplyDeleteMy little cactus is blooming as well! I have one that blooms around Thanksgiving and one that blooms in February. So crazy! I, too, like February because the days start to get longer. I haven't been out for a walk all week because of my bronchitis but my fingers are crossed that I'll get out there tomorrow! I love your positive attitude, Karen!
ReplyDeleteHere is to the fortitude of Northern Michigan drivers! And, blooming Christmas Cactus... so lovely!
ReplyDeleteWonderful ambiance in this post. My husband says he can't wait til summer comes and he'll never complain about a hot day ever again because of how cold it's been for us this winter, LOL.
ReplyDeleteLovely post Karen, such calm beauty in your photos. Happy February!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy winter also, Karen. It is much easier to snuggle up in a cozy warm house...to enjoy sweaters and wool socks and to wear wool coats when heading out of doors...and warm gloves or mittens. Much easier than dealing with the humidity of summer...the fibromyalgia isn't a fan of summer. Each and every day does indeed hold its own set of blessings and being on the hunt for them is fun!
ReplyDeleteYes, let's go out and witness something beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI'm in your mother's camp. I can't wait to turn the calendar page!
ReplyDeleteThis may be my favorite of your posts. I tend to enjoy warm/hot weather more, but I am in your camp of appreciating whatever we have. YOU make me appreciate the winter days more. Thank you for sharing yourself with us. Loved the description of your Mom's "winter pissies". LOL! I might share those with her when the temps drop below 30. ;) blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures! They create such a great mood! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHeh- I think like you I tend to antagonize those who don't like the cold. I sing how wonderful it is. Adore the term, "Winter pissies"!
ReplyDeleteThere is something to be said about keeping a gratitude journal and seeing the beauty in everyday. It brings about an awareness that is surprising.
Such a nice post with beautiful photos! This is why I like certain blogs and yours is one of the few I really enjoy....very uplifting and inspiring!
