Weekends

Technically since today is Memorial day it is part of a three day weekend but I wanted to get this post written and published. We are knee deep in decluttering and somewhat packing. I've been focusing on the two adult children's bedrooms. Yes they have a lot of stuff here and I'm thinning out the belongings. Yes this should have been done years ago with their help. There have been phone calls and discussions on what to keep or give away. A lot of the stuff can go and that is a very good thing.

My husband and I were eating dinner and I announced that I (WE) would never ever 'save' stuff again. My house is not by any means a hoarder's house, BUT I have a set of kitchen dishes that have been sitting in the basement for sixteen years unused and I never liked them in the first place.  Why? Why save them??

While I've been in the bedrooms decluttering, my dear sweet husband has been in the basement going through tools and such. Again - many unusable drills that you cannot get a battery for...

Our weekend was mostly working during the day, taking a break for lunch then heading back to our spaces then quitting at 3 p.m. I am so tired by that time. I've given ourselves several weeks to declutter and pack up the house so we are not frantically doing this job at the last moment. As we get closer to our move day I'll tell you more about our move day.

Holly loves the mayhem. She comes sneaking into whatever room I'm decluttering and steals something (chapstick). The problem is she looks so guilty doing it. And if you say 'Holly what do you have?' She swishes her tail and gives herself away. She also likes to hide behind boxes then leap out at me. What a goof ball.

The weekend was so rainy and cold but today is looking to be a brilliant beautiful day with abundant sunshine. I'm hoping we have a backyard picnic. How was your weekend?

  2. Downsizing and moving was the best thing we ever did....and being close to your sister, who I know you are emotionally so close to will be awesome!!! It's just getting there! You are so organized, I'm sure the move will go smoothly!!!!!

  3. We need to downsize but with home prices so high I am reluctant to sell this house and move into something smaller yet have to pay a high price, plus I have no time to declutter and pack. Wishing you the very best as you work so hard to get ready to move.

  4. Your process is inspiring. We have been here for 34 years. Our girls grew up in the house and there is a load of storage and closet space so it is overflowing. Last summer I asked the girls to come over and go through a closet where we were storing a bunch of their stuff. I made lattes for them and left them alone to declutter. It was a good decision because they got rid of so much stuff. I try to stay on top of it but when there is space to save, we do tend to save. Thanks for sharing your journey.

  5. You are not alone in saving things like dishes you never liked and drills without batteries! We have more than our share of those kinds of things in NJ (and a whole barn to store them in). I need to keep reminding myself not to clutter up the house in MD, but I'm afraid there will be some when we sell it next year. You are organized and can do it!

  6. You really are organized and it is inspiring!! Not that I'm doing anything...just sitting around and knitting. It has been so cold and wet. Today it gets sunny and feels nice and the next thing you know the clouds are back and it is chilly. I don't even want to take a walk...maybe a nap instead - LOL

  7. You are doing a great job Karen! I call myself a minimalist in the making. I don't believe in hanging on to much of anything these days. My mother kept everything and when she passed away the amount of stuff I had to deal with was awful. I don't ever want my kids to have to go through the same thing. I'm glad Holly has been such a good little helper lol. Take time to get out and enjoy your beautiful weather today!

  8. It's great that you are doing uncluttering before you move instead of just moving everything!

  9. I love decluttering.. I have not saved any childhood toys or clothes or anything.. my mom is the same. I am constantly and annoyingly making the kids get rid of things.

  10. It's always good to declutter. I think we all have WAY MORE stuff than we need. My big problem area is books. Maybe you can relate. I hope things continue to go well and you look toward your move. Such a big job. Have a good week.

  11. My daughter has done a great job decluttering her old bedroom, not so much my son. My husband did clear out one of the 2 huge storage tubs in our basement that hold what is left of my deceased BIL's belongings. Many, many photo albums of his vacations...no labeling...no meaning to us. Most were just trashed. Good luck with the packing. Holly must be so happy with all her found treasures.

  12. Hi Karen,
...we had a chilly Sunday as well...and a pretty normal weekend...your packing seems to be going really well...and it's always good to get a head start...
    ~Have a lovely day!

  13. You are doing well with your declutter. Isn't it amazing the stuff we hold onto. I have so many things that are family heirlooms and none of my kids or grand kids want any of it. If all those things were gone my house would be halfway decluttered.

  14. The "moving process" needs to be done every so often (even if you are not moving) because it helps cull out those odd things that you are hanging on to just because.

    Good for you!

  15. Oh Holly. Glad she's making it some fun amid the chaos of moving. It feels so good to give the stuff away, or sell it. I've only moved from a house once and that was a mild to mid panic every day from our house getting the offer we wanted, to moving into the one we purchased.
Fireman was a crazed man after we got into this house. HE unpacked it non stop for 4 days. I had to beg him to stop and at least eat a meal and relax for a bit.

  16. Packing up a house is exhausting but you are quite organized. Why do we save so much stuff? Sentiment and frugality are strong habits.
